How do you create the sense of a large formal garden in a domestic setting?

We were asked to design a new layout for a large Cardiff townhouse which was being renovated top to bottom. With a long wrap around garden and split levels the main task was how to extend the length of the garden without making it seem all too thin.

Twenty seven pleached Hornbeam trees create a wonderful rhythm along the boundary with a much looser grouping of Salvia, Rudbeckia, Geum and Aster below.
