Coastal garden on steep sloping site
South Hams Coastal
Can a staircase become a garden?
The most technically challenging garden we’ve ever worked on, this project tested our understanding of level changes and how to deal with drastic slopes in the extreme. The site climbs 21m over just 35m in distance so how to access the upper parts of the garden and create as many open transitions with the house at various levels were one of our key objectives. The final destination of the upper garden is a dramatic continuation of the built form with a series of rectilinear Corten planters that break up the garden and create multiple routes through planting. The garden will be engrossing, engaging and the perfect setting for an early morning ponder or a late evening spent admiring the view with friends. The project will be completed in 2024.
